Lemon blueberry crisp with almond cookie topping (gluten-free and vegan)

lemon blueberry crisp with almond cookie topping (gluten-free and vegan)

My mother is not one to make exotic vegan or gluten-free foods, nor does she appreciate me substituting butter for coconut oil and such things (for whatever reason). So imagine my surprise when one day, I amble into the kitchen to find a bag of brand-spanking-new coconut flour sitting on the counter.

Vegan baked French toast topped with maple blueberry crisp

vegan baked French toast topped with blueberry maple crisp

Right after departing from our five days of Suzuki violin force-feeding otherwise known as Ogontz, la familia de Baby June headed right over to Lincoln, New Hampshire for some more vacationing. Why? I am not entirely sure. This is, however, our only big vacation of the year, so it is only natural that we would want to milk the opportunity for all it’s worth.

Momofuku-inspired vegan confetti cookies

vegan momofuku inspired confetti cookies

There are a lot of annoying quotes and proverbs out there. These are the folly of motivational posters and angry newspaper editorials and weepy folk tunes and awkward mother-daughter talks; these are the phrases that have been embedded into our collective moral consciousness since childhood, whether or not they actually fit with our religion or reality in general. We tend to not think about these sayings too much, lest we discover that hey, maybe they don’t make sense worth a damn, and maybe we shouldn’t keep saying them time and time again.

Dark chocolate cookie crisp with cinnamon and cloves

Hello fellow food lover and blog reader! I’m just gonna get this little tidbit of blatant self-promotion out of the way and say that yes, I have signed up for all the social media in the past few weeks, so I’ll summarize where Baby June can be found on the interwebz. I have a Twitter account, which was formerly a parody account of what I thought a pastry chef / professional baker would be like and has now segued into pure blog-related shit. More blog-related shit can be found on Bloglovin, where I obsessively follow about five hundred blogs and counting. Not only that, but I have finally signed up for Pinterest, the pin-acle (bahahahahahaha funny pun June) of social media in the food blogosphere at this moment in Internet time—and, as Internet time tends to dictate, it will probably fall out of fashion next week and everyone will be hopping onto the next big thing. But whatever. Too late now, I already have an account.

Cookies for breakfast

There is a reason why they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is, as I have said before, the only meal (besides dessert—which of course is also very important) where it is acceptable to eat cake as the main dish. It is a baffling tradition, but one that we must fulfill nonetheless—and what better way to fulfill it than to eat a bowlful of cookies?

Let’s ignore the fact that, theoretically, this would produce the greatest cereal milk to ever grace this earth.

I myself have never eaten the stuff—my evil parents refused to let my brother and I consume such fare, relegating us to those grossly flavored oatmeal packets since we were tiny, impressionable children.  It’s a tragedy, really. What is childhood without Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms? Frankly, I don’t know shit about those traditional kid foods, but that doesn’t stop me from lusting after sugary cereals every time I tag along my mother to the grocery store. Deprivation, I say. Post traumatic oatmeal disorder.
